Sarah Seini
Sarah Seini (*1998 in Bochum) is a queer artist of Nigerien and Polish descent, based in Berlin. Her artistic practice moves between costume design, set design, performance, and sculptural textile design. She completed her Bachelor’s degree in Costume Design at the Universität der Künste Berlin (UdK) and is currently pursuing her Master’s degree in Costume Design at the same institution. As part of her studies, she completed an exchange semester at the École nationale supérieure des arts et techniques du théâtre (ENSATT) in Lyon.
Her interdisciplinary practice explores themes of intersectional identities, postcolonial experiences, fragmentation, and queerness. Combining postcolonial and non-binary forms of expression with sculptural and body-related textile practices, she investigates costume as a second skin, a carrier of memory, and a site of social inscription. Her work questions Eurocentric regimes of looking and normative ideas of the body, aesthetics, and representation, creating spaces between distortion, transformation, and beauty.
Since 2019, Sarah Seini has been working as a freelance costume and set designer for theatre, film, and performance. Her recent works include costume design for “Jeeps” (2025, directed by Berfin Orman, Theater Dessau), “Maylandschaften” (2025, directed by Miriam Ibrahim, Theater Münster), set design for “Azucar” (2023, Kampnagel Hamburg), and costume design for “YEYE” (2022, choreographed by Lois Alexander, Sophiensæle) and “Bullestress” (2021, directed by Suna Gürler, Schauspielhaus Zürich). Further collaborations include projects at Ballhaus Naunynstraße, HAU – Hebbel am Ufer, English Theatre Berlin, and the artist residency Space Camp at Tanzhaus Zürich.
Alongside her work in costume design, Sarah Seini develops her own performative works.
